There was a little squabble between two brown anoles going on out on the pool steps this morning. It never turned into a full-fledged battle, though. There were dewlaps and crests and push-ups as the two guys moved closer to each other and then backed off.

A little tongue protrusion here.

And tongue protrusion beginning here too.

After awhile the two anoles lunged at each other, snapped at each other, and then quickly separated. This anole moved down to the bottom of the pool steps, where he stayed for a few minutes, looking sad.

Finally he pulled himself together and got off the step.

He climbed back up to the top.

And he sat there by himself. The other anole watched him from a distance, not seeming interested in any more interaction.

That was about it. I’ll have to keep an eye on the pool step anoles for any more activity.

Here’s a pretty little hoverfly sitting on the rosemary plant.

Hoverflies are tiny and look almost like very small bees, but they are actually flies.
