Sophie and I went outside to watch for the Swallow-tailed kite again today, but it never showed up. However, we did see lots of other birds, including a Red-shouldered Hawk. The hawk flew past our yard with a black bird (maybe a crow) in close pursuit.

The other bird eventually felt it had chased the hawk far enough, and it left. The hawk continued to fly over our yard.

I wasn’t sure what kind of hawk it was until I finished taking photos and went inside to check my bird books, where I learned it was a Red-shouldered Hawk.

One more of the Red-shouldered Hawk.

I saw the usual assortment of mockingbirds, cardinals, doves, grackles, and starlings in the yard. While I walked around bird-watching a cardinal landed on the back of my yard chair and stayed there long enough for some photos.

This bird had that scruffy, feathers-growing-in look.

It sat on the chair looking around for a few minutes, and then left.

When I was finished and went inside, Sophie stayed in the yard, sitting by my chair and looking sad–I think she wanted me to come back out with her.
