At first glance I thought this bird at the far end of the backyard was a mockingbird. But when I got a better look, the rusty reddish brown coloring and streaked breast meant it was a Brown Thrasher. I’ve only seen this bird a few times.

There were some cardinals around too. This male cardinal had a patch of gray/black feathers on its side, something I’ve never seen before.

And I think this bird is a juvenile male cardinal. Its current color is mostly brown, the female’s color, but I think there are enough red feathers coming in for this to be a young male. There’s also the black mask starting to form on its face.

One more of the young cardinal.

The squirrel was hunting acorns in the backyard again today. I think it’s a young squirrel, and it seems pretty calm about my being out there with the camera.

The squirrel decided to leave at this point, climbing up the fence.
