I haven’t seen one of these grasshoppers in a long time–an eastern lubber, a big brightly colored grasshopper about 3 inches long that lives in the southeast US. They destroy gardens by eating everything they find. We used to have them in the yard every summer, but for years they haven’t been around–until this one arrived on the fence today.
The lubber moved slowly on the fence, maneuvering its legs carefully. These grasshoppers are not known for speed.
Face to face with the lubber.
One more of the grasshopper. A few minutes later it moved off into my neighbor’s yard.
Anole for the day: this big guy on a fence post assertively displaying his dewlap for me.

My love for jokes kicked in when I saw the shots of the beautiful grasshopper, who probably feels he has a bad reputation, “I’m not a fighter, I’m a lubber.”

Love it, Mike!
