I rarely see a Pileated Woodpecker, but today one of them landed in the bare branches of tree just past my neighbor’s yard. I couldn’t get any closer but there’s no mistaking that big woodpecker with the bright red crest.

The Pileated Woodpecker is a big bird with body length of about 16 inches and a wingspan of 29 inches. This one is probably a female. The male has a red “moustache” stripe and a red forehead, which I don’t see on this bird.

The woodpecker turned to look around. The crest looks like a kid’s spikey hairstyle.

Pileated Woodpecker looking up. Now the crest seems to have come to a point.

After the woodpecker left, a blue jay landed on a bare branch on the same tree.

And last for today is a little bluebird on a wire, looking for bugs down below.
