The two big male anoles that have been competing for territory at the top of the fence by the gate got into a fight today. They started off with some posing and posturing on the fence.

This guy is extending his tongue in addition to showing off crests, dewlap, and push-ups. The tongue display is another aggressive signal.

They approached each other, still displaying.

They threatened each other with open mouths and snapped at each other.

Moving in closer as they continued to fight. The fight went on for about 10 minutes.

A moment after this photo, the lighter colored anole knocked the darker one off the fence. That seemed to end the battle.

The smaller anoles in the area were all hiding while the fight went on, but after it was over they came out again. Here’s the little three-legged anole when he emerged.
