We had an unusual bird visitor today–one that’s been here before, but not very often. Look at that large red crest poking out from behind the tree.

It was a Pileated Woodpecker, which is a really big woodpecker. It has a body length of 16 1/2 inches and a wingspan of 29 inches. The one I saw today was a male, which you can tell by the red stripe on the side of his face. He first landed in the big pine tree.

He pecked there for a little while.

And then the woodpecker flew into another tree that was lower and closer. Here he is strutting along a branch. (Not the sharpest photo but I love the bird’s pose and his big open bill.)

And one mockingbird photo for today. This bird was perched in a palm tree, watching for prey on the ground below.
