For the past several days a Swallowtail Kite has been turning up in the early afternoon, soaring through our neighborhood and over our yard. I’ve tried to be ready for photos when it comes around, but I haven’t been quick enough until today.

This is my favorite bird, a gracefully beautiful large black and white predator with a forked black tail. It has a body length of 22 inches and a wingspan of 51 inches. I love watching it soar overhead.

Sometimes I’ve seen a kite carrying prey clutched in its feet–not today, though. I’ll keep watching for it to swoop through in the afternoon.
