There are many tall pine trees in our neighborhood, and one of them has been in a neighbor’s yard west of me for years. I’ve taken many photos of that tree silhouetted against the sunset in the evening. During this past year the tree died, but it’s been left standing there with a few brown pine needles and some dried pine cones.

This afternoon I looked over and saw a man up in that pine tree. He was wearing belts and straps and carrying a chainsaw. Apparently the neighbors had finally decided to have the dead tree taken down.

The man was working his way up the tree, cutting branches as he went.

He would look around and choose a branch.

Then he’d fasten ropes around it and cut it with his chain saw from a couple of directions.

The branch would break off and fall, restrained by the ropes. Workers on the ground used the ropes to bring the branch down safely.

And down it goes.

Eventually he reached the top of the tree, and cut the entire top section.

Tree top breaking free. The remaining tree trunk came down quickly in a couple of sections.

So there will be no more photos like these of the big pine tree against the sky at sunset.
