I was in the backyard with Max this morning when I heard the cry of a Red-shouldered Hawk. I looked up and saw the hawk soaring overhead.

It circled and turned as I watched.

And then flew off toward some tall pine trees across the street. Its legs are extended here, but I didn’t see it capture any prey.

The hawk was heading toward the top of one of the pine trees. From this viewpoint it’s easy to see the red shoulders that gave this bird its name.

Approaching the tree.

Rising up as it prepares to land.

Talons extended to grasp the tree branches.

One more lift of its wings.

And the hawk landed at the top of the tree.
