I looked up at a pine tree across the street and saw this on a branch.

When the big bird’s head came up, I saw that it was a Black Vulture.

The vulture seemed to be mainly concerned with grooming itself–it’s working on the underside of  its wing here.

Both Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures are common in our area, soaring overhead almost every day. The Black Vulture has a bare gray head and light colored wing tips, while the Turkey Vulture has reddish coloring on its face and light, silvery feathers on the rear edges of its wings.
