There was a pair of Mourning Doves on a wire out front this afternoon. This one looks like a zombie dove in this photo. Actually its head was turned to its right (the left as we look at it), grooming its neck and shoulder area, and its eye looks light blue because its  nictitating membrane, or third eyelid, is closed. This membrane helps birds clear their eyes of dirt, dust, etc.


After that, the same dove did a headless pose.


Here’s the dove looking more normal.


And here are the two doves together. The one on the left was doing the grooming and posing, but one on the right doesn’t seem especially interested.

And last for today, a two-toned cardinal. I think it’s just growing in new feathers.
