A Wood Stork flew over the yard today.

Wood Storks are large birds, about 40 inches long with a wingspan of about 5 feet. There is a spring breeding colony of Wood Storks not too far from us, so it isn’t unusual to see one flying by.

A couple of years ago I came across a young Wood Stork by the side of the road near the school where I used to teach. I had my camera with me so I stopped to take some photos. You can tell it’s a juvenile by its head–adults have a bald dark scaly head, which you can see above, while this young bird had spiky feathers on its brownish head.

The young Wood Stork stayed long enough that day for quite a few photos!

One more of the Wood Stork flying today.
