While walking at the community college today, I came across this very cute baby bird. Look at those long legs and big feet! It’s a very young Killdeer, a type of plover that lives in flat open areas. This baby bird and its family seem to be living on the softball field.

And pausing to look around.

Nearby an adult Killdeer was calling. I saw that there were several babies running around in the infield area of the softball field, and several other adults in the grassy area near third base.

Another adult did the broken-wing distraction trick. A killdeer will run away from the babies and dramatically pretend to have a broken wing and other injuries. This distracts predators away from the young birds.

In the meantime, the little ones moved closer to the adults.
