About My Dogs

We have always had dogs, and have usually had at least one basset hound. Right now in  July 2017 we have just one dog: a young mixed breed rescue dog named Max, who came to us from a local shelter in June 2016. Max is a smart, busy, active little guy and every day is an adventure for him! He loves playing with dog toys, chasing squirrels, chewing on our palm trees, and going for walks.

Back at the end of March 2016, we had two dogs: Lulu, a 13-year-old basset hound, and Sophie, a 9-year-old mixed breed. They were both wonderful dogs and we loved them dearly. In April and May we lost both of them, and we miss them so very, very much.

Lulu passed away April 6, 2016 at the age of 13. We adopted her when she was 2 and in need of a new home. She was a tri-colored basset hound who was funny, stubborn, very lovable, and loved to eat–she never completely outgrew her habit of shamelessly grabbing any food left within her reach.   She knew how to sit straight up on her back end while flapping her front paws at us appealingly when she wanted something. (Usually, if not always, what she wanted was of course something to eat.) Lulu was very sweet when she wanted to be–she would wait for me to come home when I went out, and would roll over for a tummy rub as soon as I came in the door, her tail wagging furiously.

Sophie passed away May 21, 2016 at the age of 9. When I first saw her she was a little black and white stray puppy wandering in our neighborhood, and I couldn’t stand to see her homeless. After checking around to see if anyone had lost her and was looking for her, or if anyone else in the neighborhood had already decided to take her in, we adopted her. I don’t know what breeds went into her mix but it was fun to guess. She had spots similar to a pointer, ears and a pointed face like a fox terrier, a tail that curled up over her back like a Nordic breed, just a hint of a pit bull look to her face at some angles, and was a lively, intelligent black and white dog like a border collie. Sophie was my photography assistant and had to come outside with me whenever she saw me pick up the camera. She was a wonderful, beautiful, happy girl who loved everyone she met.

Our sweet little dog Bonnie appears in the early entries on the blog up till her death in June of 2011 at the age of 15. I found Bonnie at Animal Care and Control (the city dog pound) when she was 3 months old and I was looking for a puppy. She was a pretty little mixed breed who looked like a sheltie mix. She was very sweet and very loving, a gentle, smart little dog who seemed to take on responsibility for making things go well at our house. She would come to get me when the washing machine finished, or when one of the other dogs was getting into some kind of mischief. I still miss Bonnie very much.

My first impression about Sophie was a pit bull and border collie mix. I love both of the pictures of your dogs.

Thank you, Danka_Zee! I’ve always thought I could see border collie in Sophie, and she is quick and smart. I’ve often caught a glimpse of pit bull there too, but only from some angles. There’s definitely terrier of some sort in Sophie.

There are lots of other photos of Sophie and Lulu on the blog–if you’d like to see more of them, just type the name or names in the search bar on the right.
