This big male green anole was out on the fence today. He looks a bit battered, as if he’s been in a few altercations.

He was watching a smaller female green anole down below. She came up the fence post and approached him, and he bobbed his head and flashed his dewlap.

She ran away from him up the other side of the fence post, and he whirled around to pursue her. That’s the end of her tail on the upper right.

He caught up with her on the fence rail and grabbed her neck with his teeth, an anole prelude to mating.

She wasn’t very cooperative. As he held onto her neck she moved up on top of the rail, pulling him along.

He hung on while she kept walking.

She turned around and began to drag him along in the opposite direction.

And then she headed down the fence post.

By the time I went around to the other side of the fence she had changed direction again and was now climbing up the fence post, the male anole still gripping her neck.

She finally stopped here and they spent about half an hour in this spot.

Later on I saw him back on the fence again by himself.

She had left him to go catch bugs down below.
