It was a pleasant fall day today, more overcast than sunny. This yellow leaf was on a vine on the fence.

Sophie came out with me of course.

Little anole on a sage leaf.

The herbs are near the pool steps, and on the pool steps I noticed two young anoles eyeing each other. I think they were males even though their dewlaps were  small, especially compared to the big anole I’d just seen. (Sorry about the quality of these pictures–not the best lens for the situation, and then there’s a lot of motion blur.) On the right was the red-head, doing push-ups, flashing his dewlap, and extending his tongue.

On the left was the other little guy, also bouncing up and down, showing his dewlap and his tongue.

The red-head darted toward the other anole.

The red-head on the right lunged at the other guy, mouth open, and then surprised the second anole by jumping down off the step. Or maybe it wasn’t an intentional jump and he fell.

Anyway, the red-head landed on the step below, glanced up at his opponent, and then ran off into the grass.

The other anole didn’t see the red-head run away and he spent quite awhile hanging off the step looking for him.
